Democratic National Convention Internships

The Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) is currently accepting applications for a summer Democration National Convention Interns.  Applications are due May 7th, and the internship will last from May 14th through the Democratic National Convention from September 3rd-7th in Charlotte, North Carolina.

DESCRIPTION:

This full-time summer internship with the Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) offers not only a great insider view of Oregon politics, first-hand experience in the political field, and great networking opportunities, but also the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

At the Democratic National Convention, thousands of delegates from all the USA states and territories will come together for a week to confirm Obama as the 2012 Democratic candidate, adopt a party platform, and unify the party before the 2012 presidential election.  This convention is about citizens coming together to commit themselves and their country to a path that creates more opportunity and leads to a better future.  The DPO will be bringing a delegation of close too 100 Oregonians to the Democratic National Convention, and the summer interns will travel and work with the DPO staff to facilitate their participation.

The Convention Interns will work closely with the Executive, Development, and Operations Directors in planning all aspects of DPO’s involvement in the National Convention.  This includes but is not limited to:

·      Event planning and execution

·      Creating and managing correspondence, organizational systems, and promotional materials

·      Volunteer management and recruitment

·      Fundraising and finance assistance

·      Data tracking and entry

·      Answering general questions regarding the DPO and the Democratic National Convention

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate has:

·      Experience in and passion for event planning and production

·      Strong organizational and time management skills

·      A positive, can-do attitude with enthusiasm for the task at hand

·      Demonstrated ability to think critically, solve problems creatively, and take initiative

·      The ability and desire to learn quickly, including new databases

·      Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills

·      The ability to delegate tasks and work with and manage volunteers

·      Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Word and Excel skills

·      Experience with fundraising (preferred) or experience with sales and recruitment (helpful)

·      Keen attention to detail

·      An interest in Democratic politics

DETAILS:

The internship runs from May 14th through the Democratic National Convention (September 3rd-7th).  Interns are expected to commit at least 30 per week to the party during the business hours of 9am – 5pm with occasional evening and weekend events and activities.

The DPO maintains a business casual work environment and interns are required to dress and act accordingly.  The majority of contact that the DPO has with the public is through phone calls and walk-ins -- interns must act professional and accommodating to any callers or guests who come to the office.

Those seeking college credit through their college or university must get pre-approval from the department advisor.  Upon completion of the internship, interns will receive letters of recommendation, references, and resume reviews.

Data Analyst Internship

The Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) is currently accepting applications for a summer Data Analyst Intern.  Applications are due May 1st 2012, and the internship will last from May 7th through August 2012.

DESCRIPTION:

The Data Analyst Intern’s primary responsibility will be to assist the Technology Director on current projects involving voter targeting, fundraising targeting, and election result analysis.  The intern will be asked to submit a proposal for an original research analysis or data modeling project and will work to complete that project with guidance from the Technology Director.  The intern will also work alongside other staff on a project-by-project basis and are encouraged to attend and assist with meetings, trainings, service events and other DPO projects as needed.

In addition, the Data Analyst Intern will receive advanced training on Votebuilder, the DPO’s voter contact and volunteer management database.  The intern will use this knowledge to help the Technology Director provide direct data assistance to campaigns across the state.

The Data Analyst Intern will be expected to spend approximately 10% of their intern hours performing voter contact tasks such as making fundraising phone calls, going door-to-door in support of a candidate, and entering voter contact result data.  Direct voter contact experience is essential to familiarizing interns with how the data they are working with is used in a real election environment.

REQUIREMENTS:

The ideal applicant will have completed course work or obtained practical experience in an area such as statistical analysis, econometrics, linear regression modeling, or research methodology.

The following skills are helpful but not required:

· Programming experience (PHP, Perl, Ruby, Python)

· Familiarity with SPSS or other software

· Database experience (Microsoft Access, MySQL)

· VoteBuilder or other campaign experience

Interns are asked to commit to 10-20 hours a week during the Monday through Friday 9am-5pm business day with occasional evening and weekend work.  Those seeking college credit through their college or university must get pre-approval from the department advisor.  While those interns who can commit to the entire summer are preferred, we are willing to work with the ideal applicant’s academic schedule.

Information Technology Internship

The Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) is currently accepting applications for a summer Information Technology Intern.  Applications are due May 1st 2012, and the internship will last from May 7th through August.

DESCRIPTION:

Information Technology Interns’ primary responsibility will be to assist the Technology Director on current projects involving system maintenance, server administration, and custom programming.  Interns will be tasked with the execution of a larger-scale project such as the installation of a server or the design and implementation of custom software. IT Interns will work to complete their project with guidance from the Technology Director.  Interns will also work along other staff on a project-by-project basis and are encouraged to attend and assist with meetings, trainings, service events and other DPO projects as needed.

In addition, IT Interns will receive advanced training on Votebuilder, the DPO’s voter contact and volunteer management database.  Interns will use this knowledge to help the Technology Director provide direct data assistance to campaigns across the state.

Interns will be expected to spend approximately 10% of their intern hours performing voter contact tasks such as making fundraising phone calls, going door-to-door in support of a candidate, and entering voter contact result data.  Direct voter contact experience is essential to familiarizing interns with how the data they are working with is used in a real election environment.

Marketing and Communications Internship

The Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) is accepting applications for a bright, committed Marketing and Communications Intern for the summer 2012.  Applications are due May 1st 2012, and the internship will last from May 7th through August.

DESCRIPTION:

An internship with DPO is a great way to build your resume and get an insider perspective on Oregon politics. Whether you’re trying to decide if a career in politics is right for you or you just want to help out Oregon Democrats in this important time, an internship with DPO will allow you to network and gain hands-on experience in the political arena.

Specifically, this internship will provide opportunities to build skills and experience in political communications and marketing, through both traditional media outreach and online engagement.

This intern will work closely with DPO’s Marketing Director and Communications Director on a range of projects:

·       Draft new web content, emails, press releases, and social media copy

·       Research potential new avenues for outreach

·       Monitor local press outlets, compile clips for distribution to DPO staff

·       Perform regular content maintenance on dpo.org

In addition to the above, all DPO interns also:

·       Assist and attend staff meetings, trainings, service events and other DPO projects as needed

·       Perform basic office functions such as answering phones and data entry

·       Receive guests and volunteers as they enter the office, answer general questions

·       Participate in grassroots efforts, such as phone banks, canvasses, and voter registration drives

DETAILS:

This internship the internship will last from May 7th through August.  Interns are expected to commit at least 20 per week to the party during the business hours of 9am – 5pm with occasional evening and weekend events and activities.

Those seeking college credit through their college or university must get pre-approval from the department advisor.  Upon completion of the internship, interns will receive letters of recommendation, references, and resume reviews.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal intern has:

·       A positive, can-do attitude and enthusiasm for the task at hand

·       Excellent writing skills; aptitude for creative thinking and output

·       Basic technological proficiency and online/social media savvy

·       Some familiarity with the workings of government and issues in Oregon politics

·       Interest in the news and media dynamics

Development Internship

The Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) is seeking a dedicated and passionate Development Intern for summer 2012.  Applications are due May 1st and the internship will run from May 7th through August.

DESCRIPTION:

Interning with the DPO is a great way to get an insider view of Oregon politics.  Whether you are trying to decide if you would like to pursue a career in politics, explore nonprofit fundraising or just want to try something new, this internship with DPO is a great way to network and gain first-hand experience.  Our Development intern will gain valuable skills and insight into nonprofit development, fundraising, donor cultivation, event planning, and database management.

The environment at the DPO is also an egalitarian, team-oriented, and supportive place to learn.  We take interest in our interns’ professional goals and to strive to make their experience at the DPO as mutually beneficial as possible.  Upon completion of the internship, interns will receive letters of recommendation, references, and resume reviews.

The Development intern will work closely with the Development and Operations Directors on projects around:

·       Grassroots monthly donor membership drives

·       Event planning, promotion, and execution

·       Data entry and integrity

·       Donor research and prospecting

·       Compliance to unique political finance rules and regulations

In addition to the above, DPO interns also help:

·     Assist and attend staff meetings, trainings, service events and other DPO projects as needed

·       Perform basic office functions such as answering phones, responding to messages, and data entry

·       Receive guests and volunteers as they enter the office, answer general questions

·       Participate in grassroots efforts, such as phone banks, canvasses, and voter registration drives

DETAILS:

This is a winter summer internship that will run from May 7th through August.  Interns are expected to commit 15-20 business hours per week during the 9-5 business day with occasional evening and weekend events and activities.

The DPO maintains a business casual work environment, and interns are required to dress and act appropriately.  The majority of contact that the DPO has with the public is through phone calls and walk-ins.  Interns must act professional and accommodating to any callers or guests who come to the office.

Those seeking college credit through their college or university must get pre-approval from the department advisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
